History of the Lovers Card
The meaning of the Lovers card hasn't changed greatly throughout history. The two figures depicted (traditionally a man and a woman) are sometimes referred to as "The Twins," a nod to the card's ruling astrological sign: Gemini. In one historical deck, the Lovers card is symbolized by Paris of Troy being forced to make a decision between two women: Helen of Troy and Aphrodite. The angel above is not Raphael, but Cupid. In another, a man is shown making a choice between a woman who loves him and one who doesn't. The meaning here? Sometimes the Lovers isn't just about choices: It's a yearning for something we cannot have.
